GROUND-BREAKING CEREMONY SIGNALS NEW ERA OF HEALTHCARE IN CRS COMMUNITY

The Calabar Nightingale Lions Club has commenced efforts to improve access to rural healthcare with the ground-breaking ceremony for a proposed Healthcare Post and Community Health Outreach Centre in Etak Ukana, Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The ceremony, held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, drew wide participation from government officials, traditional rulers, health professionals, and other stakeholders.

Delivering the project address, the Club President, Lion Roseline Nsa, said the initiative would bring essential healthcare services closer to residents, particularly mothers and children, while strengthening preventive and community health outreach. She added that the project is estimated to cost about ?5 million, with the club already engaging stakeholders and mobilising funds for its completion.

The District Governor, Lion Elder Ezekiel Umoh, represented by Past District Governor, Lion Elder Sunday Eloma, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to humanitarian service and sustainable community impact. He noted that the project would expand access to quality healthcare and improve health outcomes in Etak Ukana and neighbouring communities.

Representing the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Nursing, Mr. Coco-Bassey Esu, described the initiative as a significant contribution to strengthening primary healthcare delivery at the grassroots.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of Akpabuyo LGA, Effiom Bassey Effiong, represented by Hon. Daniel Effiong, assured the community of continued government support for the successful completion and operation of the facility.

A major highlight of the event was the donation of land for the project by the Village Head of Etak Ukana, who commended the club for its commitment to community development and improved healthcare access.

Other dignitaries at the ceremony included Ms. Antan Okor, Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Orientation the State Chairperson of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Comrade Josephine Bassey, represented by Comrade Monday Anake the Lions Region 5 Chairperson, Lion Robert Antigha the Service Chairperson and Project Coordinator, Lion Enobong Okon Lions among others.
